# Hyvä vs Luma vs Breeze: Fastest Magento Theme in 2026

*Published: 2026-09-29 | Author: Jason Ratzlaff*

Most Magento performance advice in the last few years has been about the frontend — and for good reason. The default Luma theme ships a heavy RequireJS and KnockoutJS stack, and replacing it with Hyvä or Breeze can transform a store’s Lighthouse score. But a fast frontend only paints quickly after the server has answered. This post looks at both halves and explains why the best-performing Magento stores fix both.

Why Magento Fails Core Web Vitals
---------------------------------

According to HTTP Archive and Chrome UX Report field data analyzed in July 2026, **51.9% of Magento mobile sites pass Core Web Vitals**, compared with 81.8% for Shopify and 87.0% for Shopware. The breakdown is revealing: Magento’s pass rate for Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is **62.9%**, while its pass rate for Interaction to Next Paint (INP) is **90.8%** ([Store2x study](https://store2x.com/en/studies/core-web-vitals-shop-system-comparison/)).

In other words, the biggest thing holding Magento back is how fast the main content arrives — and LCP starts with server response time. You cannot paint a product image the browser has not been told about yet.

**Hyvä is free now**The Hyvä theme became free and open source in November 2025, which makes it the realistic baseline for new Magento builds. Hyvä Checkout and its commercial products are still paid.

------------------------------------------------

- **Luma** — the default. Product pages commonly carry several hundred kilobytes to over a megabyte of JavaScript.
- **Hyvä Themes** — replaces Luma’s frontend with Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS. The biggest change of the past year: **the Hyvä theme became free and open source in November 2025**, after previously costing €1,000 ([Hyvä announcement](https://www.hyva.io/blog/news/hyva-is-free-open-source.html)). Hyvä Checkout and its enterprise products remain commercial. Agency analyses of HTTP Archive data report mobile Core Web Vitals pass rates around 65% for Hyvä versus 41% for Luma — secondhand figures, but consistent with what most developers see.
- **Breeze (Swissup)** — keeps Luma compatibility while replacing its JavaScript layer. The Breeze Evolution theme is free; Swissup’s own figures claim up to 3x faster than Luma ([vendor claim](https://swissuplabs.com/magento-2-breeze-evolution-theme.html)).
- **PWA Studio** — still receiving releases, but Adobe’s investment has shifted to Edge Delivery Services.
- **Adobe Commerce Storefront on Edge Delivery Services** — Adobe’s newest storefront, built from drop-in components and targeting perfect Lighthouse scores. It requires Adobe Commerce and a rebuild of the storefront ([Adobe docs](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/developer/commerce/storefront/)).

With Hyvä now free, it is the realistic baseline for most new Magento builds.

Is Hyvä Worth It? What a Theme Can’t Fix
----------------------------------------

A theme controls what happens after the HTML arrives. It does not change how long Magento takes to generate that HTML. On a cache hit, that is fine. On a cache miss — a filtered listing, a search, a logged-in customer, a cart — Magento still loads products through its EAV model and runs hundreds or thousands of queries before the first byte leaves the server. Hyvä on top of a slow backend is a fast car stuck in traffic.

Hyvä + FastMagento: Fixing Backend Speed Too
--------------------------------------------

[FastMagento](https://github.com/parkktech/FastMagento) works on the server side, so it is theme-agnostic. I have tested listing pages, product pages with swatches, add-to-cart, and checkout on **Hyvä 1.5.2, Luma, and Breeze Blank 2.10**. It serves product data from OpenSearch instead of EAV, which cuts the server time that sits in front of every uncached paint.

On my 513,000-product stress catalog, measured as cold, uncached renders (median of three runs, module disabled versus enabled):

Server render time on a cache miss, 513,000 products

The part of LCP a theme cannot touch. Median of three runs.

Those are server-side generation times, not Lighthouse scores, and they are the portion of LCP a theme cannot touch. (Published in the [FastMagento README](https://github.com/parkktech/FastMagento).) Category grids are still served from MySQL today, so category pages are not yet faster in wall-clock time — worth knowing if your traffic is mostly category browsing.

How to Speed Up a Magento Store, Step by Step
---------------------------------------------

1. **Cache** Varnish or Fastly, correctly configured, so anonymous repeat traffic never reaches PHP.
2. **Frontend** Hyvä or Breeze to cut JavaScript weight and improve rendering and interactivity.
3. **Backend** FastMagento for the uncached requests — search, filtered listings, logged-in shoppers, cart, and checkout.
4. **Images** modern formats (WebP or AVIF) and correctly sized hero images, often the single biggest LCP element.

Each layer fixes a different part of the page load. Skip one and it becomes the bottleneck.

Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

Is Hyvä free now?Yes. The Hyvä theme became free and open source in November 2025. Hyvä Checkout and Hyvä’s enterprise and commerce products remain commercial.

Does FastMagento work with Hyvä?Yes. FastMagento works on the server side and has been tested with Hyvä 1.5.2, Luma, and Breeze Blank 2.10, covering listing pages, product pages with swatches, add-to-cart, and checkout.

Why do Magento stores fail Core Web Vitals?Field data from July 2026 shows Magento’s main weakness is Largest Contentful Paint, which passes on 62.9% of mobile sites versus 90.8% for Interaction to Next Paint. LCP depends heavily on server response time as well as frontend weight.

Should I switch themes or speed up the backend first?Start with a properly configured full-page cache, then address both. A lighter theme improves rendering and interactivity; a faster backend improves how quickly uncached pages respond. The biggest wins come from fixing both.
