# Best Magento 2 Checkout Extensions for Speed (2026)

*Published: 2026-09-29 | Author: Jason Ratzlaff*

Checkout is the slowest page most Magento stores serve, and it is the one page where every second is directly tied to revenue. It is never cached, it recalculates the cart on almost every step, and on the default Luma theme it is built from dozens of KnockoutJS components that load one RequireJS module at a time.

I attacked it from two directions: **Fast Checkout**, built into FastMagento, which speeds up the backend cart and totals work, and **FastMagento Checkout**, a separate module that rebuilds the checkout page itself. Here is how both compare with the other ways to speed up Magento checkout.

**~10×**faster 7-item cart render*~4.0 s → ~0.4 s*

**~0.4 s**checkout render, flat as the cart grows*native adds ~230 ms per configurable line*

**−76%**checkout totals SQL*1,250 → 295*

--------------------------------

- **Backend:** every quote reload and totals collection reloads products, prices, catalog rules, and stock. Each configurable line item multiplies the work.
- **Frontend:** the native checkout ships a large `window.checkoutConfig` payload inside the HTML and builds the page from many KnockoutJS UI components. That hurts time-to-interactive, especially on mobile.

Most checkout products fix one side or the other. Very few publish numbers for the backend side at all.

Magento 2 One Step Checkout vs Hyvä Checkout vs Bolt

Bolt’s published conversion claims are vendor marketing and have been disputed; treat them accordingly.

One-step extensions mainly improve the *experience* — fewer clicks — rather than the speed of the underlying requests. Hyvä Checkout is a genuine frontend rewrite and a strong option, especially on a Hyvä theme. Hosted checkouts trade speed for handing your checkout to someone else.

Speed Up the Magento Cart Backend with Fast Checkout
----------------------------------------------------

Fast Checkout is part of FastMagento and on by default. It serves the product, price, catalog-rule, and stock reads that checkout needs from OpenSearch instead of reloading them from EAV on every totals collection. These are my published figures from the [FastMagento README](https://github.com/parkktech/FastMagento), warm renders on my test storefront:

Cart and checkout render time by cart size

Warm render on the reference storefront, native checkout vs FastMagento Fast Checkout.

Native checkoutFast Checkout

1 simple product0.93 s**0.41 s**

1 configurable product1.08 s**0.42 s**

7-item cart4.00 s**0.40 s**

10 configurable products3.34 s**0.41 s**

The 7-item figures are approximate (~4.0 s and ~0.4 s) in the source. Source: FastMagento README.

The important pattern is the last column: checkout stays near 0.4 seconds as the cart grows, where native checkout grows with every configurable line. On a separate 513,000-product stress test measured cold, checkout totals went from 1,510 ms to 1,110 ms and from 1,250 SQL queries to 295. Because Fast Checkout changes how stock is read, I recommend placing a real test order on staging before going live.

FastMagento Checkout: An Instant-Loading Magento Checkout Page
--------------------------------------------------------------

[FastMagento Checkout](https://github.com/parkktech/FastMagentoCheckout) is a separate open-source module that splits checkout into independent “islands”:

- The contact and shipping form is static HTML driven by plain JavaScript, so it is usable immediately.
- The payment step is Magento’s own Knockout payment component, started on its own, so your existing payment methods keep working.
- The heavy checkout configuration loads after the page from its own endpoint, which keeps the page shell cacheable.
- If that configuration cannot load after retries, the shopper is sent to the standard checkout automatically, and adding `?fastcheckout=0` forces the standard checkout for testing.

It also adds saved addresses in the browser, Google Places address autocomplete, inline validation, product thumbnails, linking guest orders to matching accounts, and support for physical, virtual, and mixed carts — with no database schema changes. It requires Magento 2.4.6+ and PHP 8.1+; on Hyvä themes it needs Hyvä’s Luma-checkout fallback module. I have tested it alongside FastMagento, which is the combination I recommend.

**No standalone numbers for the frontend module yet**I have not yet published standalone timing benchmarks for the FastMagento Checkout module. When I do, they will be in the repository with the test conditions stated. The checkout figures above are from Fast Checkout, the backend feature built into FastMagento.

Which Magento Checkout Extension Should You Choose?
---------------------------------------------------

- Checkout slow because of big carts, configurables, or heavy pricing rules? That is a backend problem — Fast Checkout targets it directly.
- Checkout slow to become usable on mobile? That is a frontend problem — FastMagento Checkout or Hyvä Checkout.
- Both? Use both layers. They were designed together.

Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

What is the difference between Fast Checkout and FastMagento Checkout?Fast Checkout is a feature built into FastMagento that speeds up the backend cart and totals calculations by reading product, price, and stock data from OpenSearch. FastMagento Checkout is a separate module that rebuilds the checkout page frontend as fast-loading independent sections.

Will FastMagento Checkout work with my payment methods? It is designed to. The payment step uses Magento’s own payment component, so standard payment integrations continue to work. Test your specific payment methods on staging before going live.

Is FastMagento Checkout an alternative to Hyvä Checkout? Both rebuild the checkout frontend for speed. Hyvä Checkout is a commercial product built on Magewire; FastMagento Checkout is open source, keeps Magento’s native payment component, and falls back to the standard checkout automatically if anything fails.

How much faster is checkout with FastMagento? In published warm-render tests, a 10-configurable-product checkout went from 3.34 seconds to 0.41 seconds with Fast Checkout. Results depend on catalog, extensions, and hardware.
